Laxatives are found in some very popular weight loss products that are readily available online today.  However, these slimming products are not sold under the name Laxatives, but rather under different names such as Dieters’ Tea, Slim Tea and others.

So what are Laxatives? How do the Laxatives found in dieters’ tea and similar products work for weight loss? Are they effective in weight management and most importantly…Do Laxatives have any side effects and are they safe to use for weight loss?

Laxatives and Weight Loss – What Are Laxatives?

Laxatives herbs for weight loss - unhealthiest way to lose weight

Laxatives are the active ingredients found in herbs that make up slimming tea. These herbs are known as aloe, senna, rhubarb root, cascara, buckthorn and castor oil. These are natural ingredients derived from plants and are often used to ease constipation.

Herbal slimming tea products seem to be pretty attractive in terms of losing weight, however you should know more about such products before using them, as they might adversely affect your health if used excessively.

Laxatives and Weight loss – How Do Laxatives Work?

The Laxatives in slimming tea products increase the bowel movement, thus clearing out the bowel tract. This is why they have been used for generations to overcome constipation. Some people also use laxatives to help them cleanse their bodies of toxins.

Laxatives also prevent food contents from being absorbed into the intestine and therefore get rid of excess calories in meals. Excessive consumption of Laxatives may also affect the absorption of the fats in the body which results in greasy diarrhoea. This is the reason why Laxatives are considered by many as an effective aid to weight loss.

Laxatives and Weight Loss – What Are the Side Effects?

Laxatives, when excessively consumed, will certainly result in weight loss. However, abusing Laxatives can also cause permanent damage to your health and in some cases may cause injury and even death.

Laxatives have dangerous side effects which include diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fainting, rectal bleeding, electrolyte disorder, and dehydration, permanent damage to the GI Tract, and weakening and softening of the bones (also known as osteomalacia). Laxatives can also cause severe constipation and pain for increased periods of time, which, in some cases, may need surgery and removal of the large colon.

Laxatives and Weight Loss – What the Effects on Women’s Health?

Using-laxatives-to-lose-weightWomen in particular should be cautious about trying to lose weight with Laxatives. Women are more prone to using Laxatives. It is not known whether Laxatives interfere with their menstrual cycle or fertility, but women should stop using Laxative teas if they noticed any increased menstrual cramps. Pregnant women or women trying to conceive should avoid completely using Laxative products.

Laxatives and Weight Loss – Summary:

Laxatives may help you lose weight but they will certainly cause severe damages to your health. Laxatives may be the unhealthiest way to lose weight. It is therefore recommended that you avoid using Laxatives for weight loss; and instead, you should use other available safe ways to lose weight through healthy diet, weight loss workouts and some effective, and relatively safe, natural weight loss products.
